Dioxins

Dioxins - Vinyl Council Australia

Dioxins is a general term for a group of toxic organic chemicals which are created during combustion. Some hundreds of these compounds exist but they can be classified into three main families:

• polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs)
• polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs)
• polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Dioxins accumulate in the bodies of animals and humans and are known to be carcinogenic. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified the dioxin 2,3,7,8–TCDD as a known human carcinogen.
