Safe use - Vinyl Council Australia

PVC resin in its natural form produces a rigid plastic. However, the polymer has the capability of being modified in a wide variety of ways through the use of additives. This is what makes PVC so versatile in its use for many different useful applications.

Additives provide the characteristics required for the end product such as:
plasticity
flexibility
strength
opaqueness
colour
transparency
lubrication
insulating capabilities
resistance to flame
conducting properties
rigidity
resistance to heat and weather

The use of additives in any product must be assessed carefully and such an assessment is an important part of product life cycle thinking.

From a safety, health and environmental perspective, concern has been raised from the use of two groups of compounds traditionally used in PVC:
• Phthalates, used to soften PVC for flexible applications;
• Heavy metal compounds used to heat stabilise the polymer for processing.
