South African Green Building Council Gives PVC Green Light

South African Green Building Council Gives PVC Green Light - Vinyl Council Australia

January 12 2012

The Technical Steering Committee (TSC) of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) announced its withdrawal of the Mat-7 PVC Minimisation credit from the Green Star SA rating system. A PVC Expert Reference Panel (ERP) was formed via the GBCSA to aide with domestic and international technical. This included best environmental practice initiatives related to the manufacture, use and end-of-life of PVC building products.

The SA rating system now sets out a “menu” of all the green measures which are incorporated to produce a green building, with points that are awarded to projects that have incorporated the measures and, after a period of weighing produces a total score which determines the green rating for that building.

The withdrawal of the Mat-7 PVC Minimisation credit from the Green Star SA rating system acknowledges the progress South African PVC industry has made to date, addressing the historical environmental concerns of PVC and improve the environmental performance of PVC that is traditionally an important product used in the construction and decorating industries.
